Beware of Cruise Line Phone Scams: How to Stay Safe and Book with Confidence

Picture this: You’re getting ready for your dream cruise when you decide to call the cruise line with a question. You do a quick Google search for their phone number, dial the first one you see, and a helpful representative answers. They inform you of an urgent issue—a $300 port fee that must be paid immediately, or you won’t be allowed to board. Panicked, you provide your payment information, only to later realize… it was all a scam.

Sadly, this scenario is happening more and more. Scammers are posting fake customer service numbers online and tricking unsuspecting travelers into paying fraudulent fees for port charges, drink packages, or other “mandatory” costs that don’t actually exist. They sound professional, knowledgeable, and completely legitimate. But once you pay, the money is gone—often with no way to recover it.

How These Scams Work

Scammers are taking advantage of Google search results, buying ads or setting up websites that mimic real cruise lines. When travelers search for a cruise line’s customer service number, they might see these fake numbers at the top of the search page.

Once you call, the scammers may:

  • Claim you have an unpaid port fee, tax, or service charge that must be paid immediately.

  • Tell you your drink package, shore excursions, or gratuities were not paid and need to be settled before boarding.

  • Offer a “special deal” but require you to book over the phone and provide credit card details on the spot.

  • Say there’s a problem with your reservation, and they need personal or payment details to “fix” it.

Many of these scammers sound extremely convincing—they know cruise terminology, policies, and even specific ship details. This makes it easy to believe them, especially if you’re in a rush or stressed about your upcoming trip.

How to Protect Yourself

1️⃣ Never call a number from a Google search. Always use the phone number listed on your official cruise confirmation email or the cruise line’s actual website (typed directly into your browser, not from a search result).

2️⃣ Be cautious of urgent payment demands. Cruise lines don’t call last-minute demanding extra fees to secure your booking. If something doesn’t feel right, hang up and verify through official channels.

3️⃣ Use a trusted travel advisor. When you book through me, you don’t have to worry about scams. I handle all the details, provide the right contacts, and ensure you’re only paying legitimate charges. Plus, if you ever need to call the cruise line, I can provide you with the correct number.

4️⃣ Use credit cards, not debit cards. If you do fall victim to fraud, credit cards offer better protection and dispute options than debit cards.

5️⃣ Report suspicious numbers. If you encounter a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the cruise line itself to help prevent others from falling victim.
