My First Flight & Why I’d Do It Again
For anyone who's ever said “I want to travel...but flying terrifies me”—this one’s for you.

I remember my first flight like it was yesterday. Adam and I were headed on an adventure, but I was too busy gripping the armrest—and his hand like my life depended on it—to feel the thrill at first. As the plane gathered speed down the runway, I nearly broke his fingers. (Sorry, love!) Then suddenly, we were airborne. That feeling—lifting off, leaving the ground, and floating above the clouds—was like nothing I’d ever felt.
I kept staring out the window in awe: the softness of the clouds below us, the tiny roads crisscrossing the land, and even the shadow of our plane dancing across the ground far below. It was magic.
Then came a little bump of turbulence. Adam? Dead asleep. Me? Instant panic. I grabbed his hand again, and all he said—without even opening his eyes—was, “It’s normal.” Somehow, his calm anchored me. And that moment changed everything. Now, we fly two or three times a year, and every time I settle into my seat, I feel a little more confident—and just as wide-eyed with wonder.
🌟 From Nervous to Noteworthy: Tips for a Calmer First Flight
Whether you're traveling solo, with your kids in tow, or navigating accessibility needs, these tips can help you take flight with more peace of mind.
1. Start Small:
Choose a short, direct flight—a mini getaway to dip your toes in the sky. A Michigan-to-Chicago hop is the perfect “practice trip.”
2. Prep Your Mind (and Your Playlist):
Try meditation apps like Calm or Headspace. Build a playlist of comfort songs, or dive into an audiobook with a soothing narrator.
3. Pick Your Seat Wisely:
Less turbulence? Over the wings. Nervous flyer? Try an aisle. Love the views? You know where the window is.
4. Let the Crew Know:
Flight attendants are pros—they’ll keep an eye out for you and offer reassurance if they know you’re nervous.
5. Bring a Flight Buddy (or Trusted Travel Planner):
Having someone calm by your side—like my very own Adam—makes a world of difference. And if you’re flying solo, working with BYC Travel means you’re never truly flying alone.
6. For Families with Little Flyers:
Snacks, coloring books, tablet games—pack the comfort. Talk through the experience ahead of time and turn it into an adventure. (Tip: gum or lollipops help with ear pressure!)
7. Accessible Travel Tips:
- Request wheelchair or mobility support when booking.
- Bring notes for medications or medical devices.
- Ask about sensory-friendly airport options if needed.
- Build in extra time so you can move at your own pace.
As an Accessable Needs agent I handle all of these!!!
8. Create a Ritual:
A pre-flight coffee, a wing-view selfie, or a quick journal entry—whatever grounds you, make it part of your routine.
9. Celebrate Your Win:
You did the hard thing. Soak it in. Share your story. And maybe even plan the next adventure.
